Digital audio player
I’d like to buy my dad a digital audio player for his living room that connects wirelessly to a computer in his den. I was thinking about getting a Roku Soundbridge but was wondering if there were any other options that I should be considering?

Hey Matt. I have to say that my ex boss used to rave about the slim devices squeeze box. http://www.slimdevices.com/
I’m considering getting one for myself at xmas. A bonus for it, if you’re in this kind of thing, is that the software is open source so you can muck around with it and get other people’s addons for it.
I’ve been looking at the Logitech Wireless DJ. I like the cool remote. It’s kinda like a handheld mp3 player except the music comes from your computer and comes out the stereo. And it seems to support protected WMA and AAC.
I use the roki soundbridge also. I like it.
Probably overkill but I love my Sonos system. Seriously, nothing even comes close to how easy and elegent this thing is.
Of course all that goodness isn’t cheap, since just the remote costs $300 and a non-amplified zone is around that.
Yeah, the Sonos is out of my price for a gift :).
How about a TiVo? For the price of a Soundbridge, you can get him a Series 2 box with a year of service, and it’ll do a lot more than stream music.
How about a Media Center Extender :)
I want something that isn’t dependent on a TV…
I can vouch for the Slimp3 player from http://www.slimdevices.com. I have a 1st generation Slimp3 and it was great. It has since been replaced with an xbox360 media center extender. My only complaint is that the display is difficult to read from more than 10 feet. I have no idea how old your father is, or how large his living room is, but it may be a consideration.
I have an Olive music server, the Musica (http://www.olive.us). It is capable of multiroom streaming, and doesn’t need a TV for the display. I enjoy the unit way easy to setup and sounds amazing.
Wow that Olive music server looks nice, but a little pricey to give my dad! :)
What digital audio player did Papa Goyer wind up receiving from you?
If you’re still looking for a digital audio player, that is not dependent on a TV, consider Terratec’s iRadio. I wrote a review on it in my blog: http://www.htpc-usability.com/terratec-noxon-iradio?lp_lang_pref=en
But I don’t know if it’s available in the US.
Hey Matt,
I personally use a Philips Streamium SL50i, cost £50 here in the UK, display is only 2 lines, but the speed is quite good
Thanks
Tony
