CES: Sony XL2 / Sony XL100

At CES I stopped by the Sony booth to check out their Media Center display. They had a Sony XL100 on display (though they were also referring to it as the XL2?). What I gathered:

  • Dual tuner: NTSC tuner & ATSC tuner
  • Available late January/February
  • Same price as XL1
  • VIIV PC (though I don’t think those dates line up then?)
  • Changer is optional - Does this mean they will start to sell a standalone changer!?

i bought this machine and was very disappointed in the DVD changer software. It works OK with DVDs but is abysmal with CDs. Under MyDVD, it finds all the DVDs and the recognition is OK…the sorting by genre and year is pretty bad…it should give the user a list of the found genres or years..

but what was really bad was the ID of the Audio CDs in the DVD changer when viewed under My Music or My Changer…it kept on ID and then displaying the CDs and Unknown Album…not sure what is going on…are these (MyDVD, My Changer) Sony or Microsoft applications? Historically, Sony OEM software has always been a bit dodgy but I wouldn’t expect this from MS…

My DVDs and My Changer are Microsoft features. Yes, we could have odne a better job with sorting by genre and year but we were on a short schedule and didn’t have time to get them just right. Expect to see that fixed in Windows Vista.

As for audio CDs, we never intended for the user to store audio CDs in a DVD changer and the support we provide is just enough for the user to essentially eject discs from the changer. However, Sony did build some music ripping apps but those are their own.

Matt, hi. I just bought the XL2 Digital Living System as Sony sent me two glossy mailing coupons for $500 off the XL2 system, and an additional $300 on a second changer. Did I make a mistake?

I’ve been a Sony person for about 40 years. The TV I’m hooking up to this is the Sony XBR40-8000 which is the last tube model they made and has a DVI HDTV IN jack as well as (2) component jacks. I use one for my Bose LifeStyle 48 (their top of the line) which is great storing 340 hours of music CDs, but no DVDs; hence, that brings in the Sony XL2.
Am I hooking this up to the Bose, or is it a standalone unit? $1500 later, I hope I didn’t blow it again with a Sony unit. Also, does it have speaker attachmenta, or was it made to connect to an existing stereo?

Thanks for the sight, and hopefully for the response.

    Jon

Have been using an XL2 for several months now…a bit quirky, but I have successfully ripped my 450+ CDs to it…yes, the changer can be a bit trying at times.

My question: is there anyway to print a list of what’s in the changer? Or, even better, pull it into Access or some other DB? Haven’t browsed around the file system, but I’m sure this info is being stored somewhere…
    thanks!
    mark.
